WEEK ENDING 22nd SEPTEMBER

OUTDOOR FINALS

New bowlers excelled themselves at the St Andrews club championship finals, with Tracy Cracknell winning two titles

and Karen Taylor one.

Both started bowling only last year and this was their first competitive season.

Cracknell partnered Norma Peters and Becky McMillan to the triples championship, then upset the formbook

with Charlie Andrews in the mixed pairs, beating Tony Lay and Becky McMillan.

Karen Taylor, also in her first proper season, proved an excellent lead to Becky McMillan in the women’s pairs

as they beat Clare Andrews and Debbie Johns by six.

That was one of four titles won by England player McMillan in a rain-disrupted weekend.

She made it three successive club championships with victory over short-mat international

Debbie Johns and also took the two-wood singles.

Club captain Robin Potter fought back well from 6-15 down to 16-19 against Jack Angove in the men’s club championship but lost by six. Angove also lifted the two-wood singles title, beating Tim Wyatt.

Consolation for Wyatt was that he edged out David Stott 21-20 in the handicap singles.

Stott, in his first outdoor season at St Andrews, was also in the winning triples team,

with Derek Reynolds and Brian Reeves.

by Ashcombe to win by 11.

Saints women finished 29 points clear at the top, a wonderful achievement for a squad with several novice bowlers. One of their players, Debbie Johns, has been selected to skip a rink for England in the British Isles Short-mat

WEEK ENDING 8th SEPTEMBER

It’s hats off to the women of St Andrews, who have won the Mid Division championship for the second year running in the Somerset County League.

Eight victories in nine matches mean that they have clinched the title with one game to spare, against second-placed Ashcombe at St Andrews this Saturday.

It’s a terrific achievement, considering that they have played the whole season without half a dozen of their most experienced players, who had made them one of the top women’s teams in Somerset over the years,

Club president Jim Keay commented, “Our women are terrific. Some of the players who have helped win the league are very new bowlers, who have come on in leaps and bounds and surpassed all expectations.

They have a great team spirit. We are very proud of them all.”

That gifted ten shots and two points to the home team. However, a 28-shot victory, which included two sixes, by Geoff Poole, Malcolm Goddard and Gordon Wride proved decisive. Two other rinks won and Saints now need only two points from their last three games to stay in Division One.

WEEK ENDING 12th MAY 2024

St Andrews women made a fine start to their season in the DRT League , winning by three shots away to Clevedon Prom.

Jill Bishop’s rink raced into a 17-2 lead then withstood a Prom comeback to win by four.

Sue Sinclair’s team pulled away gradually, finishing 13 shots ahead.

Saints men have not made such a good start in the Somerset County League, losing both their opening matches.

At Nailsea on Saturday, one of their rinks came back from 6-16 down to win by two, while  Del Johns and his men,

18-10 up with two ends left, had to settle for a draw when the opposing skip fired the jack into the ditch.

WEEK ENDING 28th APRIL 2024

Rebecca McMillan  had a brilliant week at the World Bowls Indoor Championships on the Channel Island of Guernsey.

The 31-year-old care worker partnered her fellow English champion Harry Goodwin to the silver medal in the mixed pairs and also reached the quarter-finals of the women’s singles.

The English duo missed out on the gold medal by just a few inches as Australia’s Samantha Atkinson and Ray Pearse edged the one-end tie-break in a tense final after both teams had won one set.

Watched live by her parents Andy and Marie, her partner Tim Wyatt and her daughter Maisie, as well as St Andrews vice-chairman Tony Lay and numerous other members on YouTube, McMillan and Goodwin, who had never played together before the championships, showed great coolness under pressure throughout, losing only one group match.

The pairs they defeated included world-ranked Jason Greenslade, who went on to win the men’s singles:

 Goodwin lost in the semi-finals.

In the women’s singles, McMillan’s victims included Ireland star Sandra Bailie. The St Andrews player excelled in the one-end tie-breaks until Scotland’s Natalie McWilliams beat her on the extra end in the quarter-finals.

It was a very busy week for the Weston player – on one day, she played 60 ends of bowls.
